I was a high school student with a part time internship/job in a research lab that was looking into this protein that was found in breast milk ducts. The lab had recently made a breakthrough in the structure/function of the protein, but had run into a new wall in its application in the real world/pharmaceutical realm. Then I had an idea that was the exact missing piece for this. However, before I could share my findings, everyone working in the lab was being interviewed/photographed for the news on this discovery that we had made and we were all making lots of money off of this. Being a high school student, I was quite irresponsible with my money. I did, however, want to do some good with this. So I suggested that we try to help some local people. There was a nurse strike ongoing in the community and I wanted to donate some of my winnings toward their cause. I also wanted to donate some of my money to sponser a diabetic person's insulin for the rest of their life. But for whatever reason, we went about this in the sketchiest way possible, being super secretive about it. Somehow, we ended up shooting up a store (it was kind of like target, but I am not sure if it was actually a target) with guns and stuff. Some people were killed, but my specific gun never did any shooting. Somehow, I took the blame for all of this, and then everyone in the community shunned me. They had also seen me being reckless with my money before, so they figured this was just a fatal flaw in my character and literally everyone I knew wouldn't talk to me, including my best friend and coworker in the lab. She knew everything that had happened and my exact role/thoughts/opinions on everything, but she never stood up for me. Flash forward 10-15 years, I had moved away, and I wasn't doing as well. I was strapped for cash and living a little better than paycheck to paycheck, but still not thriving. I went back to visit family and people were still mad at me and yelling at me and calling me names in public and harassing me. It felt insane but I kind of understood at the same time. I went by my old high school and lab and it was like a whole different place. The lab was deserted, and the school was more like an office building and for some reason I had a cubicle that was my cubicle when I had went there. When I was walking around my old lab, I found the old conference table and there was still my sticky note (under a pile of other sticky notes) with my great idea from way earlier in the dream. But on the other sticky notes were notes and equations and things that all added up to the new protein we created being extremely toxic. To the point where everyone else at the lab had died a slow and painful death just from working with it so closely. I was going through all of these notes and things when my old best friend showed up and I shared my findings with her, and she was shocked. She had taken some of the blame for the things that happened, but very very little - little enough that people didn't hate her for what she did, but they still hated me. And then I found out that the cubicle next to mine belonged to my first crush in high school and he was shocked to see me there. I asked if he knew anything about this and he said everyone did, and they lowkey blamed me. I was so confused why they would blame me for this when it was something that was barely a thing when I was working there, and he said that they just blamed me for everything bad. So then I continue working on this problem, and I find that my original great idea on how to make this work would have prevented this protein from being so toxic. I shared my findings publicly, and after some reluctancy, the public kept reading about it and talking about it and eventually they realized I was not the person that they had made me out to be. Also, while I was working on this, my crush confessed that he had always liked me but had to keep up the ruse when I was a pariah. So then we were kind of kissing occasionally but nothing super serious because I was still kind of hurt by what he had done before.
